World Languages–a great reason to fully fund collections

Did you know it’s estimated that 20% of Seattle’s population will come from an Immigrant or Refugee community by the year 2010?  The Seattle Public Library meets immigrant and refugee patrons where they are with an important and growing world languages collection. Together with bilingual librarians, language line translation services, and a ladder of resources The Seattle Public Library reaches out to welcome all our new neighbors.

World language collections are the foundation of learning and exploration for a fast growing percentage of our population. Please help us preserve all library collections this budget season. The Mayor’s proposed budget for 2009 and 2010 is 2.2 million dollars short of the library’s projected need. We’re in an ecomomic downturn. Libraries grow in importance as needs increase. Please email your councilmembers showing your support for library collections now or send email as “official testimony” on Oct 8 in the hour between 4:30 and 5:30 to council.live@seattle.gov  For more information on how you can help: advocacy@splfriends.org
